ONCE AGAIN I FOIST MY MUSIC CHOICES ON YOU HAHAHA. But no, seriously, this is one of the best postwar jazz compositions and great for a Wednesday.

With aim or completely aimlessly?

I will agree it is one of the best and most iconic.

The main beat is hard enough at the relatively simple “1-1-2-3, 4-5" before the sax comes in over the top. Paul Desmond does a great job making it seem easy, but I’m quite convinced it isn’t.

I prefer aimlessly, it’s worked for me up to this point. Found a second pressing of Dave Brubeck Quartet LP the last time around.

Sounds like me approach to the used books and music store here. If I try to plan to get anything I want *exactly* it’s not going to happen.

You’re coming in on the pickup to beat 5, and that and the whole first measure act as a pickup to the whole song. Good stuff, and yes, it sounds easier than it is. Great music is often that way.

5/4 is probably my favorite time signature.
Also, here’s Pavement’s take on it. They do the 5/4 thing, then a bar of 6/4 to round it all out. Good times.

Here’s another fine example of 5/4. The first verse. Brutal.
I saw Helmet back in 2007 and someone yelled out for this song. The response was “We don’t know how to play that right now.”

You launched me on a five or ten minute quest to ID time signatures in some Spoon songs, so well done.

And to think Brubeck was only allowed to graduate provided he promised never to teach piano to anyone...
In high school (early 90's) I took drum lessons from an instructor, and she instructed me to bring in a tape of something in the style I’d like to learn. I brought in the ‘Take Five’ album. She was a bit speechless, not having any idea where to begin. I didn’t really understand why until I’d been playing for a lot longer. Once I’d gained a better sense of feel, and still wasn’t any good at playing jazz, I understood her bewilderment. It’s not something you can just pick up without dedicating a lot more time than I ever did to it.

I was also listening to some Maiden with funky signatures this morning. Number of the Beast they play at a lot of concerts, but Phantom of the Opera not so much.

Did someone say odd time signature?

No, nobody said weird time signature. Not a one. Well maybe once. A little bit. Hardly at all.

Spoon are masters of hiding weird time signatures in their songs.

I think it there was a new member that joined before the tour and they hadn't got around to learning it yet. I know that they have played it live since.

It never gets old. But I do. I saw them touring for Unsung. It was my very last day of high school. I just got up and walked out halfway through the school day. What were they gonna do? Suspend me? Got to meet Helmet because I left early. They borrowed boards from my friends so they could skate before the show. It was a good day.

Oh wow....THAT is an outstanding story!
Around that time I had some real luck with picking out albums based on hearing 10 seconds of one song from it, and that was one of them. Also happened to be the very first CD I ever bought. I ripped the MP3 I was listening to today from it.
